ENSO and agriculture: reading the evidence

ENSO provides climate context for agriculture. To understand a crop season, connect that context to the place, time of year, actual weather and crop evidence.

Start with the place and season

El Niño and La Niña can shift the likelihood of rainfall and temperature patterns. Those relationships vary by location and season, and individual events do not reproduce every expected impact. A global phase is not a local crop diagnosis.

Keep four questions separate

  1. What does the climate source report?

Read the observed RONI period, official advisory issue date and outlook valid period separately. An outlook is not an observation.

  2. Which agricultural season is relevant?

A typical crop calendar helps identify planting and harvest windows. It does not establish actual field activity this year. CropArc’s currently prepared calendars cover selected contexts only.

  3. What was observed locally?

Use available regional reports and dated measurements. Missing reports do not mean favourable conditions; regional concern does not assess every field.

  4. What do annual crop statistics show?

Production, yield and harvested area describe different quantities. Their annual dates do not identify a particular growing month or explain why output changed.

Compare histories without assigning a cause

The CropArc comparison places RONI, annual harvests and monthly benchmark prices on a common viewing axis. Co-occurring changes can suggest questions, but do not estimate ENSO’s effect on a harvest or price. Technology, planted area, management, conflict, other weather and source revisions remain unresolved.

Food-security interpretation needs more evidence

Crop conditions and national production can inform food-security work, but they do not measure household food access, hunger or the cause of a shortage. Trade, stocks, distribution and affordability require their own evidence.
