Can Denmark feed itself?
Likely able to cover basic food needs, if farming can continue.
CropArc assessment · 2024 research
Food imports are interrupted, domestic output can be retained, and farming and distribution continue. This is a qualitative reading of published evidence, not a probability or a model of a total trade shutdown.
The ministry’s March 2024 summary supports Denmark’s ability to feed its population. IFRO’s underlying calorie comparison uses 2010–2021 data and does not adjust for livestock feed, so totals may be overstated. Feed and fertiliser imports remain vulnerabilities. No duration without imports, current emergency readiness or nutritionally complete domestic-only diet is established.

Denmark’s 2023 food balances show production at or above domestic use before stock movements for fish & seafood (394%) and meat (269%), with lower coverage for fruit (6%) and vegetables (23%). Diets would need to change, and continued production depends on farming inputs such as feed and fertiliser.

How production matches a reference diet
2020 · published studyAbout the dietary benchmark
This is a historical model from Stehl et al. (2025), using 2020 production and population. Its age-adjusted Livewell targets for ages 1+ compare food quantities in grams, not calories or actual consumption. It assumes domestic output can be retained rather than exported.
A below-target group does not by itself establish insufficient food overall. People need nutrients, which different combinations of foods can provide; fruit is not a separate survival requirement. This study does not test those substitutions or all possible adequate diets. FAO: meeting nutrient needs ↗
The study adjusts for feed, seed, non-food uses, food losses and edible portions. It sets missing use inputs to zero and floors negative adjusted production at zero. We retain its reported results as a separate reference; these assumptions are not applied to CropArc’s food-balance data.
Livestock production is not adjusted for the origin of its feed. Imported farming inputs and distribution disruptions are not modelled. Surplus in one group does not cancel a gap in another within this benchmark.

Which foods can Denmark supply?
2023How to read these ratios
Calculated as production ÷ (production + imports − exports). A surplus does not establish independence from imports or the ability to provide a complete diet. These percentages cannot be added or averaged into a national food score.
Cereals exclude beer; fruit excludes wine. Milk excludes butter and is not a separate measure of fresh dairy or cheese. Group totals can conceal deficits in individual foods.
A reported zero can reflect source rounding. Missing values are held for review, never shown as zero.

Why these bars do not add up exactly
Separate bars retain the source’s accounting residual instead of forcing a 100% split. Other uses & losses includes seed, processing, losses and non-food uses. The exact source figures remain below.
Feed supports livestock production. It is not directly available as human food, and these balances do not identify which uses came from domestic production or imports. Feed and the resulting animal products must not be counted twice.

Fruit and vegetables: from output to diet2023 · production & food supply, including imports
Domestic production and food supply measure different stages. Neither measures what people eat.
Vegetables
- Domestic production102 g
- Food supply · includes imports411 g
Fruit, excluding wine
- Domestic production22 g
- Food supply · includes imports292 g
Same scale on both charts: 0–500 g. Production is gross output, before exports and downstream waste; food supply includes imported products. Source commodity weights are not edible portions.
Why this is not a domestic share
The bars are not parts of a whole. Production can leave the country or enter processing; food supply can include imports and stock movements. Dividing these bars does not identify the domestic origin of food eaten.
How does this relate to a healthy diet? Guidance, definitions & remaining gaps
Danish guidance gives approximately 600 g of fruit and vegetables daily from age 11 and 400 g on average for ages 4–10, with at least half vegetables. Younger children have different amounts. These are age-specific reference amounts, not a target applied to every resident.
These production bars do not measure a percentage of dietary needs. The food categories, edible portions and waste must be aligned, and the population’s age mix needs a matching target.
Potatoes, nuts, dried or canned fruit, mushrooms and olives are excluded from the guidance total. Juice counts only up to one small portion; cooked pulses have an additional recommendation. FAOSTAT groups do not provide all these distinctions.

Oilseed cakes and meals are much more import-dependent than cereals or coarse fodder. Domestic production of animal foods can therefore rely on foreign feed inputs.
Protein is not calories or feed weight
This is a calculated share of reported feed crude protein by origin. It is not a percentage of food calories, people fed or livestock output that would survive an import interruption. Japan’s feed measure uses total digestible nutrients and cannot be ranked against this one.
FODER1 does not report total feed weight for these periods. Missing weight cells remain missing. Protein is the shared unit used here; feed groups and their subgroups are not summed.
Feed source details Original values, status and method
Own calculations based on Statistics Denmark, FODER1. Domestic share = domestic crude protein ÷ total crude protein × 100. Import share uses the reported import quantity independently. Rounding can prevent origins from adding exactly to totals.

Release note & source fingerprints
From 2020 the fodder types "Beet residue and pulp" and "Tapioca, citrus and guar meals" have stopped. The new fodder types are "Sugat beets pellets, dried and wet sugar beet pulp and potato pulp" and "Citrus pulp, pellets and other vegetable residual products". The large increase in Cereal products for feeding from 2020/21 is due to the addition of new products, including wheat gluten and non-burnt malt used for feeding. Please note that all figures for the latest year are provisional. FODER1 will publish the final figures for 2023:2024 on January 13, 2026. After that, the table will be closed.

Calorie production research 2010–2021 · excludes livestock-feed adjustment
Strong calorie output; independence is unproven
IFRO’s 2024 assessment compares 2010–2021 calorie production with food supply available to consumers and reports production exceeding twice that supply.
Important limitation. Its calculation does not adjust for livestock feed; the authors warn that totals may be overstated. This cannot establish how many people Denmark could feed without imports.
How to interpret this research Method & original report
The comparison applies the same calorie content to production and food supply for each included product. It covers foods already in the Danish supply, excluding alcohol and stimulants. The comparison denominator is food supply, not a minimum calorie requirement or measured household intake.
Production capacity, the food mix and dependence on imported inputs need separate answers. A large aggregate does not establish a complete domestic-only diet.

Why domestic origin needs assumptions Four cereals · illustrative model
How much of each cereal’s human-food supply could be assigned to that year’s Danish production? The same 2023 source quantities give different answers when we change which source supplies food first.
These are model cases, not observed origin shares. Four cereals cover 23.7% of reported calorie supply. They do not establish a national calorie percentage or food availability if imports stop.
| Cereal | Imports & stocks to food first | Proportional mixing | Current domestic output to food first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheat and products | 0.0% | 75.6% | 100.0% |
| Maize and products | 0.0% | 15.0% | 100.0% |
| Rye and products | 26.9% | 91.3% | 100.0% |
| Rice and products | 0.0% | 0.0% | 0.0% |
Scroll sideways to compare all three allocation cases.
The endpoints are conditional allocation extremes, not confidence intervals. Stock drawdowns stay separate from current-year output even if they were produced domestically in an earlier year.
Assumptions, formulas & source quantities
- Each standardized cereal item is treated as a homogeneous pool with the same calorie content per unit across origins.
- The proportional case assigns current-year production, imports and stock drawdowns to every use in the same proportions, including exports and feed.
- The alternative endpoints assign imports/stock drawdowns or current-year domestic production to human food first. They are conditional allocation extremes, not statistical confidence intervals.
- Net stock variation is treated as the full stock flow. Drawdowns are not credited to current-year production; their domestic/imported origin is unknown. Within-year stock turnover is not observed.
- Food, production, trade and stock estimates are held fixed. Product grade, edible conversion differences, processing chains and imported farm inputs are not resolved.
With production P, imports I, stock variation S and human food F: pool = P + I + max(0, −S). Proportional share = P ÷ pool. Other sources first = max(0, F − I − max(0, −S)) ÷ F. Current production first = min(F, P) ÷ F. Positive S adds to stocks. Figures use the reported central values; rounding and wider source uncertainty are not modelled.

Verification & methodology
Conventional self-sufficiency = production ÷ (production + imports − exports) × 100. It excludes stock changes. Production divided by reported domestic supply is a separate ratio. Positive stock variation adds to stocks; domestic supply = production + imports − exports − stock variation. FAO methodology ↗
Native quantities are reported in thousand tonnes; chart percentages are rounded to whole numbers. Percentage-point changes use unrounded ratios. Balance checks allow rounding at the source’s reported precision. Flags and negative residuals are preserved; missing values are never zero. Source food groups are kept separate, without adding parents and children.
These are historical national annual food-balance estimates, not current conditions or measurements of household access, an adequate domestic-only diet or emergency reserves. Supplementary sources retain their own dates. The calorie and protein totals in the dataset include trade and are not presented as domestic production.
